Tips

Most digestive trouble comes down to three things: too much change, too little fibre, and not enough water.

Change slowly

A dog’s gut bacteria adapt to what you feed. Swap a food overnight and you outrun that adaptation, which is why sudden changes so often end badly. Ten days is a comfortable transition for most dogs.

Feed the bacteria, not just the dog

Prebiotic fibre is what the good bacteria actually eat. Chicory root, pumpkin and oats are all easy additions, and you need far less than people expect — a spoonful, not a scoop.

If stools stay loose for more than two days, stop guessing and call your vet. Persistent digestive upset is a symptom, not a food preference.
