You do not have to change everything at once. Three small upgrades cover most of the gap between an average bowl and a good one.
One: add moisture
Warm water or unsalted broth over dry food improves both hydration and aroma, which matters a lot for fussy eaters and for older dogs whose sense of smell has faded.
Two: rotate proteins
Feeding the same protein for years is how sensitivities creep in. Rotating between two or three sources keeps the diet varied and makes it much easier to spot a genuine reaction when one appears.
Three: cut the filler treats
Treats should be under a tenth of daily calories. Swapping biscuits for single-ingredient treats usually frees up room without your dog noticing anything was taken away.
